APS Scanning Overview

Our APS Scanning Service can digitise your cherished APS photos and transfer them to CD or DVD. Digital photos from APS film scans are ready to print, email and share.

APS Scanning Requirements

  • Advanced Photo System / APS / IX240 / Advantix Films
  • Developed 15, 25 or 40 exposure films

Developed APS films can be recognised by a white square on one end of the film cartridge.
We are unable to capture any additional data that may be stored on APS films such as dates, times, captions etc.

APS Scanning Results

Each frame of an APS film is fully exposed regardless of the picture format (Classic, HDTV or Panoramic) selected when the photo was taken. Classic and Panoramic prints are simply crops of the larger HDTV original, therefore all digitised APS photos are the same size.

APS films are smaller than 35mm films and therefore have a smaller area for each exposure. An APS exposure measures 30.2×16.7mm which equates to 56% of the area of a 35mm exposure. An APS exposure scanned at 4000ppi produces an image of approximately 4750×2630 pixels. This is equivalent to taking the same picture today with a 12 mega-pixel digital camera and can produce prints up to 15.8"×8.7" (A4) when printed at 300dpi.

APS Scan Examples

These are APS high resolution scans with cropping and colour correction. The 'noise' in the scanned image is film grain and is typical of the smaller APS format. APS film grain can be reduced with Digital ICE.

Recommended Scan Options

Manual Cropping

Normally a thin white border will appear on APS scans, this is the surrounding unexposed film. This unsightly border can be removed by cropping. We manually crop each frame to include as much of the original image as possible. Automatic cropping offered by our competitors uses a "one size fits all" approach that can crop important details or leave white borders.

Colour Correction

Older APS films are susceptible to discolouration and fading which often appears as a blue or purple tint across the entire image. Colour correction is a semi-automatic process that takes place in the scanner hardware to restore faded and shifted colours. We manually process and check each image to ensure the best possible scan results.

Digital Cleaning

Digital Cleaning is the process of removing unsightly dust, scratches, fingerprints and other minor imperfections from scanned images. This process does not affect your original films or prints in any way.

Our Digital Cleaning option now includes:

  • Digital ICE automatic dust and scratch removal
  • Manual retouching
  • Red eye removal
